When You Know Autumn Has Arrived!

How can you tell when it’s Autumn? Simple, you start finding spiders in your house.

There are some that put conkers in the corner of the room as spiders are supposed to be scared of them. Others just calmly remove them and put them outside. Some scream wildly and get someone else to remove them. We all react differently to spiders but love them or hate them, we certainly see them at this time of year.

Spiders Are Mostly Harmless

Largely, spiders are nothing to worry about. After all, they are an integral part of the food chain. They are also pretty good web spinners leaving beautifully intricate webs around the garden highlighted my the morning dew.

While most spiders are harmless, in recent years, we have seen more of the False Widow spider which is known to have a nasty bite. The bite can leave the area swollen and infected and painful – lets be honest, no one wants to be stung or bitten by an insect, least of all in the safety of your home.

The Habitat of a False Widow

Usually found in walls, fences and the bark of trees, the milder weathers in recent years have caused these spiders to increase in numbers. They will usually find themselves somewhere dark and quiet to spin their web.

What to Do if You Find a False Widow

This spider is not aggressive and will only bite defensively. It’s usually the female, the larger of the species that will bite and only when under threat. This could be when you stick your finger into its web and it mistakes you for prey. Suffice to say, it’s not going to find you asleep and bite you for the sake of it. If you do see one in or near your home, you can take steps to remove it by putting a glass over the top and then a piece of cardboard underneath. Then take it away from your property and release it.
